Every renter on Clara completes identity verification before submitting an application, giving you confidence that every applicant is exactly who they say they are.
This one-time process takes approximately 2 minutes and happens when renters first create their Clara account.
The Verification Process
Step 1: ID Document Capture Renters take a live photo of their government-issued ID using their device camera.
Accepted IDs:
- Driver's license
- State ID card
- Passport
The system automatically detects the document type and confirms it's a real, physical ID—not a printed copy or screen display.
Step 2: Selfie Verification Renters take a live selfie, which is analyzed in real time for:
- Image quality - Clear, properly lit photo
- Liveness detection - Confirms a real, live person (not a photo, video, or mask)
- Face matching - Compares selfie to ID photo to confirm they match
What if verification fails? Renters receive immediate feedback and can retake photos until verification succeeds. Common issues include poor lighting or glare on the ID. They can attempt as many times as needed.
Security Features
Clara's verification system includes multiple layers of protection:
Anti-spoofing technology detects and rejects:
- Photos of photos or printed documents
- Digital screens displaying IDs
- Masks or 3D-printed faces
- Pre-recorded videos
Data encryption: All identity data is encrypted and stored securely, meeting industry standards for sensitive information.
One-time verification: Once verified, renters don't repeat this process for future Clara applications—making it seamless for renters who apply to multiple properties.
What You See in Every Report
Every renter's screening report displays their verification status clearly:
✓ Identity Verified — including verification completion date
This badge appears at the top of the report, giving you immediate assurance that the renter's identity has been independently confirmed before you review a single piece of their application.
Why This Matters
Identity verification eliminates the most common rental application fraud tactics:
❌ Using someone else's information to apply
❌ Creating fake identities with stolen personal data
❌ Submitting multiple applications under different names
❌ Impersonating renters with strong rental history
Combined with income verification, credit checks, and reference checks, Clara's identity verification creates multiple layers of protection so you can make confident leasing decisions based on verified, trustworthy information.
