References from previous landlords are one of the most powerful parts of your Clara profile — they give future landlords direct insight into what you're like as a renter.
When you invite a reference, here's what to expect.
How It Works
1. You send the invitation During your application, you'll enter your reference's name and email address. Clara sends them a secure link to complete their reference on your behalf.
2. Your reference receives an email They'll be asked to answer a short set of questions — it typically takes just a few minutes.
3. The reference is added to your profile Once completed, the reference appears on your profile and is included in applications you submit.
What Landlord References Are Asked
Previous landlords or property managers will be asked:
- Did the renter pay their rent on time and in full?
- Did the renter take good care of the home or property?
- Was the renter a courteous neighbor?
- Would you rent to this person again?
They'll also have the option to add additional comments.
Personal references are asked to speak to your character generally — they won't receive the landlord-specific questions above.
You Choose What to Share
You control which references are included in your applications. If you receive multiple references, you can select the ones you want landlords to see. This gives you the ability to put your best foot forward.
Tips
- Give your reference a heads-up before you send the invitation so they know to expect Clara's email
- Check your dashboard to see whether your reference has responded
