Your personal statement is an optional section of your Clara profile where you can introduce yourself to landlords in your own words. Think of it as the part of your application where you're more than just numbers and reports — it's your chance to make a personal first impression.
When a Personal Statement Helps Most
A personal statement is always a nice touch, but it's especially valuable when:
- You're a first-time renter — explain your situation and why you're a reliable choice
- Your credit score is low or unavailable — provide context and show what's changed
- You have gaps in employment or rental history — give landlords the full story
- You're relocating — share why you're moving and your plans for stability
- You have a background check item you want to address — get ahead of it with honesty and context
What to Include
Keep it to one or two short paragraphs. Focus on:
- Who you are — your work, lifestyle, what makes you a good renter
- Your reliability — steady income, long-term plans, responsible habits
- Context for anything on your profile that might raise questions
Example: "I'm a software developer relocating to Austin for work. This is my first time renting on my own — I previously lived with family while finishing school. I have steady employment and a guarantor supporting my application. I take pride in maintaining a clean, quiet living space and I'm looking for a long-term home."
What You Don't Need to Include
Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords cannot discriminate based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), familial status, or disability. You should never feel obligated to share any of this information. Your personal statement is about your strengths as a renter — nothing more.
Keep in Mind
Your personal statement is part of your reusable Clara profile, so write it in a way that works across multiple applications rather than tailoring it to one specific property. You can update it anytime from your dashboard.
